CHAPTER 16: AFTERCARE

Before using harsh removers, always try to neutralize color with a toner to minimize damage. If removers or bleach are necessary, condition the hair before and after, and gently dry hair before applying chemicals to reduce breakage. Have fun with color—if the result surprises you, stay calm, correct carefully, and focus on conditioning for healthy, beautiful hair.

A great colorist considers every factor before coloring hair. Yet, despite skill and care, sometimes the color turns out unexpected or unwanted. Many variables—medications, health, even vitamins—can affect how hair responds to coloring or removal. When this happens, remember, don’t panic. Hair color is correctable. Take it step by step and protect the hair’s health and integrity. All chemical processes cause some damage, with bleaching and color stripping being the most damaging. Clients will need extra care to maintain healthy hair and vibrant color. Provide them with toning shampoo, deep conditioning masks, and leave-in conditioners to use at home. Many colors can be refreshed between visits with toners or glazes.
