An umbrella term that refers to a community of people outside of White, cisgender societal norms, heteronormative, and embodies more intersecting, expansive identities across race/ethnicity and gender, sexuality. Acronym identifying men who engage in same-sex sexual behaviors but may not necessarily identify as bisexual or gay. A way of self-labeling for queer Latinxs applied to feminine (jota), masculine (joto), and gender- expansive (jotx) forms. Derivatives used as pejoratives against sexual and gender minorities were reclaimed as a source of political activism and empowerment. A broader term used as an adjective or noun embodying social and cultural justice to support queer Latinx people. express themselves without feeling judged. Similarly, DiGrazia (2024) has highlighted pricing, noting that assessing the costs of services should not be based on whether they are for a male or a female. However, they should be based on the service time, hair length, and technique that will accommodate diversity in looks and preferences. Spinosa (2024) has also noted the importance of labeling and decor. Gender inclusivity includes respecting gender identities by appropriately labeling and decorating salon spaces, such as restrooms, with labels that are consistent with inclusive language. This practice boldly supports diverse gender identities and helps create comfort and ease for people using them. Figure 1 shows an example of a gender-inclusive restroom. Figure 1. As cosmetologists and barber stylists work to understand more about gender inclusivity, they must also consider the importance of establishing this sense of diversity within hair salons. As Quinn (2024) noted, the traditional setting of hair salons has not been a place of comfort and safety for people of nontraditional sexes, genders, and sexual orientations. Similarly, Kulak (2023) shared that barbershops and beauty salons have been traditionally binary in attracting male and female orientations within their services, pricing, and marketing approaches. The changing times have created grand opportunities for redefining salons. The need for this change is significant and essential when planning for future success. Therefore, a vital question is: What is a gender-inclusive salon? Shop owners and stylists must understand the significance of this adjustment and how to establish the look and feel of gender-inclusive hair salons. There are many answers to inquiries related to gender- inclusive salons. Quinn (2024), Spinosa (2024), and Salon Direct (2024) have described gender-inclusive salons as safe and welcoming spaces where no assumptions are placed upon any person walking through the door or upon any individual in the chair. In these spaces, shop owners and stylists keep an open mind and purposely do not project internal biases against people of nontraditional gender identities. Practices in gender-inclusive salons intentionally decrease apprehension by not adding to gender anxiety and are applied to provide excellent services to all clients. Spinosa (2024) has shared that gender-inclusive salons may have the following features. Staff members who know different hair types and styles and respect each person’s identity.
