Audience This course is designed for dental professionals who treat patients with vascular and/or cardiovascular disease. Course Objective The purpose of this course is to provide dental professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize oral manifestations of cardiovascular diseases and other systemic or multiorgan diseases with a vascular component, and also develop a basic understanding of the medical implications of dental disease. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Discuss the prevalence and history of cardiovascular disease and its relationship with periodontal disease. 2. Describe the signs, symptoms, and oral manifestations of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. 3. List oral presentations of cardiac agents used in treating cardiovascular disease. 4. Identify oral manifestations of congenital cardiovascular diseases and diseases with a vascular component. 5. Explain oral healthcare recommendations for patients with selected cardiovascular conditions. Faculty Paul Subar, DDS, EdD, FACD , is a tenured professor, Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, and director of the Special Care Clinic/Hospital Dentistry Program at the Univer- sity of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California. In addition, he holds a clinical profes- sorship at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine in Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Subar earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz; his DDS at the University of California, Los Angeles; his advanced training in hospital dentistry at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center; and his Doctor of Education at the Benerd School of Education, University of the Pacific.
