DCA05DE Dental Ethics and the Digital Age, 3rd Edition _ _________________________________________

CONCLUSION This course has provided a comprehensive overview of dental ethics and current ethical challenges facing the dental profes- sion today. After exploring important historical events that framed the development of ethical standards, early ethical influences, legal concepts, and today’s professional codes of conduct, dental practitioners should have a greater apprecia- tion for their profession and a clearer understanding of their professional obligations. One of the important concepts discussed was the relationship that dentistry maintains with society, which places trust and confidence in the dental profes- sion. If the trust inherent in this relationship is lost, dentistry’s professional status will also be lost. Dental providers must respect and honor this trust to safeguard dentistry’s status as a learned profession. This course also explored some of the new ethical challenges the profession faces because of the digital technology boom of the 21st century and presented cases and case discussions on topics related to advertising on social media, dual relation- ships with patients, privacy issues, teledentistry, cyberbullying, consumer review websites, and artificial intelligence.
