• The substance often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended • Tolerance, as defined either by a need for increased amounts of a substance to achieve a desired effect or diminished effect with use of the same quantity of the substance • Withdrawal, as characterized by specific withdrawal syndromes defined for each substance or using a substance to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms • A persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use

According to DSM-5-TR , to diagnose an individual with a SUD requires that he or she have a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by two or more of the following, occurring within a 12-month period: • Recurrent substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home • Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous • Continued substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems
