Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches, Migraines, and TMJD: Summary
Upper Cross Syndrome : characterized by rounded shoulders, head in front of the body, and a curvature in the neck, protruding shoulder blades. This is a result of a weakness in the neck flexors, rhomboids, and serratus anterior muscles. These muscles become weak due to tightness in the trapezius and levator scapulae muscles Treatment Protocol NOTE: Strongly recommend referencing course video for manual treatment demonstrations for optimal learning comprehension • Myofascial Release - no lubricant ○ Spreading, stripping, and rolling techniques • Swedish techniques - apply light lubricant • Trigger point release ○ Importance to reference intensity scale. Importance to establish an end range number with patient prior to treatment. Okay for it to be “uncomfortable” but not causing pain
Postural Considerations
Appropriate Ergonomics
Intensity Scale
○ Initial pressure press slowly until patient verbalizes max intensity scale number → hold and wait for pain to reduce to at least a 2 → slowly increase pressure again until patient verbalizes max intensity scale → repeat hold and wait → repeat this 3-4 times ○ Ask if patient is feeling pain anywhere else
