Appendectomy, surgical removal, is the only guaranteed treatment for appendici- tis and is often completed laparoscopical- ly, which results in reduced recovery time and surgical infections (Smink & Soybel, 2022). The surgery may be completed using a laparoscopic or open approach. The most common complication is a sur- gical site infection, which is more likely to occur in a patient with perforated ap- pendicitis and is relatively rare in cases of simple appendicitis. Appendiceal rupture can result in peritonitis, leading to sepsis and death.
EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH Recent research and attention have focused on managing uncomplicat- ed appendicitis cases with antibiotics and close monitoring to avoid surgery. This approach has been studied with mixed results, and more research is needed (Smink & Soybel, 2022).
