● Micro-needling : This treatment is beneficial for mild forms of non-inflamed rosacea, as well as fine lines, acne scarring, wrinkles, pigmentation, and even stretch marks. (Wojak, 2015). ● Cold water compression : Cold therapy or cryotherapy is a modality used to reduce the body’s core temperature and cooling the skin’s surface through cold water compressions. This treatment decongests the effects of rosacea, and abates pain symptoms through cold cotton compressions, or herbal poultices. It is excellent for sensitive skin. (Fleck-Madigan, 2016). ● Hydrotherapy/thermotherapy : Medical esthetics machines (such as HydraFacial, Jet Clear/Jet Peel) deliver alternating hot and cold temperatures and active ingredients to the skin at supersonic pressure. This equipment cleanses with oxygen and saline, which exfoliates, boosts lymphatic drainage, and provides extraction benefits. (Campbell et al., 2018). ● Pulverizer : A mist sprayer/water vapor device may be used in place of the esthetic steamer. This device emits a soft, fine warm mist that can be infused with water and herbal tinctures, floral hydrosols or tea, which hydrates and soothes skin from the phytonutrients extracts and is suitable for sensitive skin. (Fleck- Madigan, 2016). ● Cooling devices : Cold therapy or cryotherapy is a thermal energy modality used to reduce edema, decrease blood flow, abate pain, and inflammation. Handheld cooling devices are made from glass, ceramic, or metal filled with a cryogenic liquid material that provides cooling activities. Cooling devices include crystal face wands, icing wands, stainless steel rollers, microcurrent golden spoons, cold hammer, and gemstone rollers in jade or amethyst. (Fleck-Madigan, 2016). ● Aromatherapy : This is the art of using essential oils and aromatherapy from plant material including plants, leaves, twigs, fruit peels, grass, needles, roots, wood, and flowers in a spa setting for therapeutic purposes. The most commonly used essential oils are lavender (soothing and calming), sandalwood (grounding and balancing), and blood orange (purifying and uplifting). (Wegrzyn, 2015). Rosacea treatments to avoid ● Microdermabrasion : A popular exfoliation method used by estheticians; this treatment refers to mechanically exfoliating the superficial layers of the skin using the diamond tip (particle-free) method. The mechanical stimulation can aggravate rosacea and cause increased redness, inflammation, and further capillary damage. (Wojak, 2015). ● Massage therapy : Rosacea skin is sensitive and easily irritated; therefore, only use massage products that do not contain alcohol or fragrance nor any irritating ingredients when massaging a client with rosacea. ● Chemical sunscreen : Although daily sun protection is essential, avoid using chemical sunscreens, as they can sting and cause irritation to sensitive rosacea skin. Home care for rosacea ● Hatha yoga : This originated in China and is sometimes referred to as qi gong or “moving meditation.” It involves mind and body practices with mental focus. ● Meditation : Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation that encourages awareness of a person’s surroundings without judgment. Meditation alleviates anxiety, improves concentration, promotes emotional stability. ● Steroid eye drops : Rosacea is not curable, but prescription eye drops that contain steroids can help
to control symptoms of inflammation. They are not, however, intended for long term use. (Gotter, 2018). ● Tai chi : This non-competing martial art is known for its health benefits of alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain. (Nordqvist, 2018). ● Gratitude : According to Saeed (2017), being optimistic, embracing thankfulness, and loving each moment as it comes can improve one’s health and immune system and lower inflammation. ● Saline solutions : Formulated for dry eyes, these can help to lubricate and prevent cornea damage. ● Physical sunscreen : It should contain active mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are beneficial to the skin and work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays from the skin. ● Mineral makeup : Mineral-based cosmetic powder can provide additional sun protection. Natural ingredients and remedies for rosacea The ingredients outlined here are derived from natural sources and are rich in antioxidant protection. They are therefore beneficial for treating inflammation, and neutralizing free radicals generated from UV light and pollution: Skincare ingredients : Salicylic acid, stem cells, sea buckthorn oil, arginine, essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) as anti-inflammatory agents, botanical extracts of caper bud, mushroom, cucumber, oat kernel, willow bark, chamomile, hibiscus, edelweiss, vitamin A, zinc oxide or titanium sunscreen, turmeric, honey, peptides, vitamin E, evening primrose oil, ginger, oatmeal, red raspberry, arnica, sulfur cleanser, alcohol-free products, green tea, hyaluronic acid and glycerin as oil-free moisturizers to help retain moisture without a heavy feel, mineral makeup, aloe vera, lactic acid, pumpkin seed oil, sodium PCA, niacinamide, red and brown algae, allantoin, jojoba seed oil, hydrolyzed silk, and squalene. Managing potential rosacea flare-ups and triggers ● Climate/weather : Avoid sunlight exposure, strong winds, humidity, extreme heat, hot baths or showers, droughts, and storms. ● Medications : Corticosteroids, a group of hormones like natural hormones produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands, are used both on the skin and internally to treat a variety of skin disorders. ● Avoid emotional stress : Mental stress is an external factor, which can aggravate inflammation, induce skin itchiness, and inhibit wound healing. (Windle, 2016). ● Physical exertion : Decrease heavy lifting and loading jobs as well as intense exercise and sweating. ● Products : Use non-irritating products, cleansers, exfoliating scrubs, cosmetics, acetone alcohol, synthetic fragrance, witch hazel, peppermint, eucalyptus, menthol, alpha hydroxy, vitamin C, and hydroquinone (skin lightening), chemical sunscreens, and SD alcohol. (Windle, 2016). ● Diet : Avoid dairy products (sour cream, yogurt, cheese) chocolate, spicy foods, citrus fruits, and soy sauce. ● Beverages : Any liquor or hot drink is a potential trigger, although not a cause of rosacea. Avoid or limit red wine, beer, gin, vodka, champagne, and bourbon. ● Environment : Avoid exposure to (UV) ultraviolet radiation from the sun, causes oxidation and cell damage. ● Massage therapy : Massage can greatly benefit rosacea and other inflamed skin conditions. Light manipulation should be used to avoid over-stimulation, and treatments should not last more than 10 minutes.
