● Emotional stress : Instruct clients to keep calm and try to stay relaxed. Flare-ups are more likely to occur when the client is feeling stressed. ● Do not rub, scratch or pick : A widespread cause of itching is dry skin (xerosis), a reaction to stress. Clients should be instructed to gently rub or ignore, or may find relief through moisturizing creams, and ointments. ● Diet : Certain foods are known to trigger flare-ups, including alcohol, gluten, tomatoes, eggplant, white potatoes, red meat, dairy, processed food, refined sugar, and spices. ● Excessive sun : Getting a sunburn will cause a flare-up, so keep sun exposure to a minimum and use sunscreen, reapplying every two hours when outdoors.
