Client consultations for facial extractions Client consultations are important for both potential and returning clients. Consultations provide the skin care professional the opportunity to ask questions and allow for the client to ask questions as well. Clients may be nervous about the procedure or process, and the consultation is a time for estheticians to address the client’s questions and concerns in a professional manner. The esthetician may notice something when examining the client's skin that differs from the concerns brought forth by the client, and the client consultation is the opportunity for both parties to discuss these topics. Even if the client is returning, consultations are important at each appointment because the client may be interested in new procedures or may have important information that must be conveyed to the skin care professional. The esthetician or cosmetologist will also want to consult with a returning client to see how the client responded to any products or procedures previously recommended by the esthetician. Questions to ask potential and returning clients Asking both potential and returning clients the right questions during a consultation is almost as important as the consultation itself. An esthetician should ask clients about their allergies and the symptoms of their specific allergic reactions when they come into contact with irritants and allergens. Before performing any facial procedure, always ask the client about any medications or supplements they are taking. Additionally, professionals should always ask the client about their skin care routine, dietary habits and restrictions, and hydration habits. Asking the right questions is vital to developing an accurate understanding of the client's skin. It is helpful to ask the client whether they have oily, dry, or combination skin and whether their skin typically gets red after exfoliation. Understanding skin type will help the skin care professional use and recommend the appropriate products. Further, it is a good idea to ask the client if they regularly see a dermatologist and whether they use any prescribed topicals. Knowing what medications or supplements a client takes can help avoid potentially dangerous allergic reactions. Some commonly asked questions during a facial consultation address allergies. The client should be forthcoming in explaining their allergies and the type of reaction expected if exposed to allergens. The skin care professional may also want to ask the following questions to ensure the procedure is safe for the client: ● Are you under the care of a dermatologist or other medical professional? ● Have you ever been prescribed a medication called Accutane? ● Have you used products containing glycolic acid? ● Are you pregnant? ● Do you have any medical conditions, such as epilepsy? What to expect during a facial extraction Clogged pores, blackheads, and pimples can make skin appear dull and tired. One of the best ways to achieve a clear, bright complexion is through a facial extraction procedure. Clients can sometimes feel unsure about experiencing a new facial procedure, but their skin care professional can help by setting expectations. After the skin has been appropriately prepared, pressure is then applied to the pores manually, or with tools, to effectively clear the blocked pores. After the process is complete, an antibacterial product and/or soothing mask may be used to remove any residual bacterial and help heal irritation from the process.

Additionally, consultations are important so the client and the skin care professional can complete paperwork prior to the procedure. A client card or client record is important for record keeping and to ensure that the consultation, procedures, and suggestions are documented for future visits. Consultation cards can also be used if the client wants to relay information about their facial procedures to a medical professional or other licensed skin care professional. A skin care professional should periodically check in with the client on the issues that were discussed from the prior visit. During the consultation, the esthetician will visually inspect the client's skin. The skin care professional should be able to notice skin conditions from the consultation and discuss those with the client. The use of a magnifying glass and touch will help the skin care professional get a closer look at the client's skin. The esthetician is a skin care professional, and the goal is to make the client feel comfortable with the process and procedures. In addition to asking clients about their medical history, the skin care professional will also need to gather information from the client about their lifestyle. Start by asking the client about their skin care regimen. Ask what type of products they use and how often and be sure to note their likes and dislikes about the products or the results. Another important question to ask is what result the client hopes to achieve by getting a professional facial service. Knowing what the client expects in terms of results is a great opportunity to educate them on product ingredients and give them a timeline for when they should expect to see improvement. Some clients may believe that they will see drastic results following their first facial, but a thorough skin care specialist conducts a comprehensive consultation with the goal of creating realistic expectations. When is it Unsafe to Perform a Facial Extraction? Facial extractions performed by a professional are generally safe, but there are a few instances when the procedure is not recommended. If the skin has acne lesions, visible inflammation, or it is clear that a skin condition is present, the skin care professional should not perform a facial extraction procedure. If the professional notices any unusual skin conditions, refer the client to a medical professional for evaluation. Performing an extraction on inflamed or damaged skin will worsen the skin’s condition by potentially spreading infection and causing scarring. If an esthetician attempts an extraction on parts of the skin that are not ready, or if the skin care professional uses an incorrect technique, the risk of scarring, infections, and bruising increases. During a facial extraction procedure, a skin care professional will use a variety of techniques and tools to effectively clear clogged pores. The extraction process usually starts with cleansing the skin and applying moisture in the form of steam, an astringent, or a warm towel. For particularly oily skin, the skin care professional may apply a mild exfoliant for a deeper cleanse to prepare the skin for the pore extraction. A client may feel some discomfort from the use of exfoliants, so it is important to adjust the pressure depending on the client’s tolerance.
