Implicit Bias in Health Care The role of implicit biases on healthcare outcomes has become a concern, as there is some evidence that implicit biases contribute to health disparities, professionals’ attitudes toward and interactions with patients, quality of care, diagnoses, and treatment decisions. This may produce differences in help-seeking, diagnoses, and ultimately treatments and interventions. Implicit biases may also unwittingly produce professional behaviors, attitudes, and interactions that reduce patients’ trust and comfort with their provider, leading to earlier termination of visits and/or reduced adherence and follow-up. Disadvantaged groups are marginalized in the healthcare system and vulnerable on multiple levels; health professionals’ implicit biases can further exacerbate these existing disadvantages. Interventions or strategies designed to reduce implicit bias may be categorized as change-based or control-based. Change-based interventions focus on reducing or changing cognitive associations underlying implicit biases. These interventions might include challenging stereotypes. Conversely, control-based interventions involve reducing the effects of the implicit bias on the individual’s behaviors. These strategies include increasing awareness of biased thoughts and responses. The two types of interventions are not mutually exclusive and may be used synergistically.
MANAGEMENT OF POST-TRAUMATIC AND SECONDARY TRAUMATIC STRESS IN HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Self-Assessment Answers and Rationales
1. The correct answer is C. Rationale: Job burnout is characterized by physical and emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and detachment from work, and reduced professional efficacy. These symptoms are typically a result of chronic workplace stressors and do not directly encompass worry as a defining characteristic. 2. The correct answer is B. Rationale: Healthcare professionals are exposed to trauma repeatedly, ongoing, daily, multiple encounters per shift. They are subjected to significant stress frequently. The public may encounter a single event trauma, infrequently. 3. The correct answer is C. Rationale: Implementing training on STS awareness and self-care is an effective way for organizations to support employees struggling with STS symptoms. This approach helps raise awareness, provides tools for self-care, and promotes a supportive workplace culture.
4. The correct answer is A. Rationale : Although burnout has many of the same causes and symptoms as secondary trauma, burnout results from long-term non- supportive work environments. It differs from secondary trauma in that exposure to clients’ trauma is not the precipitating factor. However, overwhelming mental and physical exhaustion brought on by the work environment creates emotional vulnerability, leaving the professional feeling the impact of others’ trauma. 5. The correct answer is B. Rationale: By increasing work hours and possible exposure to addi- tional trauma, the healthcare professional will struggle with profes- sional and personal coping. To increase resilience, the professional will benefit from identifying emotions and stress as well as implementing treatment strategies in order to function effectively at work and home.
