Introduction to Golf Rehabilitation and Performance: 90 Percent Mental, 90 Percent Physical: Summary 36

○ Push : Pull is pushed to right

• Thin : Slightly more contact compared to a top shot, lower loft and higher top spin • Fat : More than desirable contact with the ground than a typical shot • Chunk : Mostly make contact with ground—typically happens when you make contact further behind the ball than at the ball. This can happen with decreased rotation and poor weight transition • Shank : Hit ball off club face and hit it on the hosel (see below) of the club Lie (Ball at Rest): • Tight : Minimal grass • Fluffy : Sitting up on tall grass • Buried : Stuck in the ground or in sand in a bunker • Uphill/downhill : Hitting up or down hill, respective Course Difficulty It is important to know course difficulty of the clients: • Course rating (upper 60s to mid 70s) : Best for people who are shooting around par/low handicap (1-9) • Course slope (55 to 155) : Easier to harder • Handicap (relative to par)/index (accounts for course rating/slope): Handicap allows for those who are not of equal playing skill to play together fairly by adjusting the par/score Anatomy of a Golf Club • Grip : Where your hands go on the club • Shaft : Metal or graphite • Hosel : Area of the shaft just above the club head • Head : Where you want to make contact with the ball • Face : Face of the club—consists of a flat surface that is meant to strike the ball. The angle at which that surface is inclined, called the loft, varies from club to club; the putter will see a completely flat face while a wedge will see a pronounced angle that will send the ball on a high flight path • Toe : Specific region of the clubface that is located between the sweetspot and the very end of the club • Sole : Located at the bottom of the clubhead and consists of the area located between the heel and the toe, and between the leading and trailing edges • Leading edge : The area where the clubface meets the sole • Trailing edge : The area where the sole meets the back of the clubhead • Bounce : The angle formed by the line of the sole of the club in relation to the line of the ground. Wet conditions = more bounce, firm/dry conditions = less bounce • Loft : The angle formed by the intersection of the line of the clubface and the line of the shaft

○ Hook : Ball spins right to left and ends left of the target

○ Slice : Ball spin right to left and ends right of the target

Other shots (not considered desirable shots) • Contact : ○ Top : Club barely contacts top part of ball with a lot of top spin and will skim along ground
